the 90s and 2000s were a whole era of tv and film where characters walk into coffee shops and are mystified that anything other than plain coffee is available. just show after show and movie after movie where a barrista asks someone if they would like to try a latte and the character turns to their friend in UTTER BAFFLEMENT like "what is she talking about?! what is a "lat-tay???"
