More high end laptops should come with giant HDDs instead of tiny SSDs. I get that people like the performance boost from using SSD, but you destroy all those gains as soon as you need to start copying stuff off over a slow external bus to make space for whatever it is that you're trying to work on. Use the savings to load up on RAM and don't use a system that crashes all the time and you probably come out ahead in the long run.
@neal I see the point you're making and to a certain degree I agree with it, but would it be fair to say that the recent uptake of decently high throughput external bus options (USB 3.1gen2 over USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 (with or without 10gigE)) alleviate that issue somewhat?
Heck, even huge drives built into dock pods that use those bus options should help out a bunch.
But yeah, counterpoint to my counterpoint, at that stage you've got a desktop machine with a detachable, luggable bit. Hmm.
