I've spent so much time working with computer floats that it just dawned on me that most people *don't* think in scientific notation. People would rather think conceptually of 10000 or 0.0001 than 1e4 or 1e-4. This mode of thought extends to matters of precision. They'll say that 0.0001 has four digits of precision.
