The online orders getting shipped today so far have all gone out in boxes that claim the contents are tea. It's really coffee inside.

The puzzle exchange used to have one where you put the puzzle together and then try to find all the cats hidden in the picture. It looks like that's been replaced by one that's the same concept but with horses.

I'm going to collect a couple more days of hourly sales data but we'll probably start reduced operating hours on Monday. It looks like people mostly stop showing up around 4PM and people aren't in a huge rush for their on the way to work coffee first thing in the morning, so maybe push the opening a half hour later. Will figure out if weekend hours need to change after this upcoming weekend. The web site, of course, takes orders for coffee to ship 24/7.

People are asking about gift certificates so I put a thing on the top of the site letting people know that we don't charge for postage if you want us to mail those. That's not a new policy, but historically that's only been used by people from out of town giving gifts to locals. Also posted drink/tea menus to help with higher volumes of call ahead orders.

Linus is actually the programmer. The OS is Linus's Monster.

I somehow ended up on a mailing list for some company that does weird free industry events in the UK and they're claiming to do a health and safety one really soon and like, really? You're really expecting a couple thousand people to show up at that event in the UK in early May? (not as if I ever go to any of their events, I don't even know how I ended up on their list)

Had a good chat with a roaster friend in New Zealand today.

TBH, I'd love to see a distribution of Android that only shipped with NextCloud / fediverse apps, and offered system-wide integration for each of them. It'd be great to get a mobile system that treats self-hosted platforms like first-class providers.

Potato Cakes

This is basically Irish Potato Farls. They're simple, filling, and cheap.

• 1 average potato 🥔
• butter
• flour
• tsp baking soda
• pinch of salt

1. Chop, boil and mash the potato (leave the skin on if you can – it's nutritious). Blend some butter into the mash to give it a better texture.

2. Knead in flour, baking soda, and salt. I never measure the flour. Use enough to get a cookie dough consistency. The right consistency will probably still be quite sticky.

3. Split the dough into balls and dust them with flour (it makes them easier to work with).

4. Flatten each ball into a circle and either pan fry them or oven bake them, turning occasionally till golden brown on each side.

These are tasty served with a little chilli sauce. Alternatively, you can mix other things into the mashed potato before making it into dough to add extra flavour and/or nutritional value. Chorizo, spinach, chicken, rosemary, or feta all work well.

The cat is really into the belly rubs tonight.

Sales in the last hour and a half of the day (starting when people just relying on news headlines might think we needed to shut down) came to $6.51. Earlier in the day sales were decent. Will see what happens tomorrow.

Not much yet in the way of actionable feedback from the technical reviewers for my book, but the first impression after just skimming it has been highly positive, so maybe the book as it is right now is not complete garbage (I sent it to people I trust to tell me if it is). I didn't think it was, but it's nice to hear other people I respect agreeing with that.

"The water's all green!" my niece exclaimed.

"Yes, and do you know why?"

"No... why?"

"Cos it's the one day a year the leprechauns all come out and piddle."

"Why?"

"They don't have toilets, so just hold it all in."

All was quiet in the backseat for a minute.

"Do they poo once a year too?"

"Yes, but a different day."

"Which day?"

Before I could answer, my partner piped up, "February 13th; it's where chocolate really comes from."

I would not be surprised if I have 0 customers for the rest of the day. I've spaced floor mats 6 feet apart for a couple of lines and put out signs letting people know what's going on, including a citation for people to find both the actual order and the section of that order which applies to my shop (11b). It was a decent sales day earlier today and the dead time is letting us catch up a little more on restocking the shelves and disinfecting everything.

Found the actual order (would be nice if the news sites covering this would link to the damn primary source material) and it looks like we do need to make some changes. Can stay open, can't offer seating. I'm removing the chairs now.

The Governor has ordered all bars and restaurants in Wisconsin to close by 5PM excluding take out. I do not believe this impacts my shop as we are neither a bar nor a restaurant, but I also recommend staying home, preferring takeout if you do show up, and if you want to call in orders and payment info over the phone I'm happy to run those out to your vehicle so you don't have to get out of your car or touch anything to get your coffee.
