I wonder how bad it would be if I didn't put back the 5 screws under my laptop keyboard. It can't be good to keep popping that out pushing it back in and it would speed things up if I ever need to disconnect the not externally accessible battery again.

paper straws

@cwebber@octodon.social True, though it's a shame that we're leaving trash in either of those places.

paper straws

@cwebber@octodon.social Yep, everything is different kinds of awful which makes it hard to compare, though remember that nothing biodegrades in a landfill the way these are currently managed so if you want to take advantage of that it's still important to divert that waste appropriately.

paper straws

@cwebber@octodon.social They may have, but it's not at all clear from that link. Specifically, where you often run into surprises is in the pollution impact of paper production. Note, I would not be at all surprised to find that paper straws are superior and it's also obvious that not using a straw or reusing something more durable will be a better choice. The three Rs are in the preferred order: reduce, reuse, recycle.

@cwebber@octodon.social As a business owner I can confirm that lots of business owners complain loudly about imagined problems, but also that sometimes issues related to waste are difficult to properly research. When you look at the entire production to landfill chain it's not uncommon to discover surprising results. I have not done that research specifically regarding straws and am not weighing in on that for now.

So at this point it's pretty much guaranteed that I'm going to be a giant ball of stress before I go on my next trip, but at least I have about 24 hours of air travel to calm myself down.

It's a shame because the initial tech support call was handled pretty much perfectly and had they just promptly gotten on with doing what they said they'd do everything would be fine by now, but everything after the phone call has been pretty messed up.

Replacement fan arrived but they sent the wrong part. WTF

When developing new espresso blends it's a good idea to make sure that's delicious both as espresso and in milk drinks. I've had some coffees marketed for use as espresso that just get completely lost in a cappuccino and more rarely stuff that's fine in milk but wildly unbalanced when unadulterated. A good espresso blend should be delicious both ways.

Just accidentally tried connecting to the wrong WiFi a few times in a row because the thing I wanted to click on kept getting moved around in the list. The solutions to this sort of problem are easy to think up but not as easy to implement in code as you might expect.

What kind of messed up galactic coordinate system puts Earth in sector 0-0-1?

I'm dropping so many online services/platforms this year.

Next month it wasn't going to work with the new laptop unless I changed filesystems despite there being absolutely no good reason to require such a change so I couldn't see setting it up. If it's not going to work on my primary machine there's also no point in continuing to pay for it and having transitioned to a replacement, no reason to keep the account at all.

Just shut down my (paid) Dropbox account instead of renewing it. Their practice of proactively breaking platforms that it was previously working on just fine has driven me to Nextcloud which, frankly, seems to be a superior option all around provided you're okay with the initial setup.

After more time of being loud and vibrating, the computer is back to its original fan volume level. It's the odd sort of problem that's really bad for a day or two and then not so bad for a day or two and then back to awful. I'll be glad to get the replacement part swapped in on Monday as I did not want to subject other people in a different country to that.

Someone sent a tech support question today. I asked them to paste into the terminal:

ps -A | grep postgres

and they say that fixed the problem, which is of course impossible but hey, fixed is fixed.
