I would never in a million years purchase or play a fishing video game but if a nonfishing video game has fishing in it (AC, Zelda, Harvest Moon, some mmos) I will fish in that game all the live long day. I am a fishing fiend in nonfishing video games. And i will still never, ever buy an actual fishing game. Ever. 🤷

If I'm willing to tolerate something nearly 3 inches thick some of the smaller desktop form factors might be workable. Maybe make the case transparent? That's probably enough space to build in a really good keyboard, too. Hmm...

So this is probably what pushes me to learn about 3D printing, right?

On a long shot I took the machine to the computer repair place a block over, but since laptop parts aren't well standardized they couldn't sell me a part. I didn't expect they'd have something but I figured I needed to try.

If it's not bigger/heavier than, say, the Toshiba T1600 (this used a 286 processor and had a 3 color display to give you a sense of things) I can work with that.

Why can't we have standardized laptop form factors and modular parts available so people can just build their own laptop? I'll gladly take a slightly larger thing if I could just buy replacement parts and manage repairs myself.

fan saga (2/2)

10/15 - GPU fan arrives. This is not the part they were supposed to send so it does me no good. I call back and they say they'll overnight the correct part so it'll arrive by today.

10/17 - I still don't have a tracking number because they haven't shipped the damn part which means that it's impossible for this to arrive before I need to leave for the airport and I'm stuck with this problem for an extra 2 weeks (at least).

I am not happy with how System76 has handled this.

So here's the time line on the fan saga: (1/2)

10/5 - Fan starts failing in the morning. I call System 76 tech support. They agree that it's a bad CPU fan that needs to be replaced. I'm up front about my upcoming travel and the need to get this dealt with before I leave the country but that's still far enough off that it should be fine.

10/10 - I still don't have a tracking number and someone on the support ticket suggests not sending the part until I'm back. The shipment had already gone out.

Pro tip: Overnight shipping only works if you actually ship the thing.

@neal In that spirit, here's a cat @kit_ty_kate found in the Marrakesh airport, which humans cannot enter without a valid boarding pass (or piece of paper which states that one is entitled to a boarding pass on entering the airport). We saw the cat in a room which humans can't enter without a passport.

Cat hotels should be a thing. Like a regular hotel but the doors all have cat doors on them and the place has a whole bunch of adoptable cats that might choose to hang out with guests. Feel free to steal this business idea.

Maybe the hotel will have a cat for me. I stayed in a place like that once (cat showed me the way to my room on check in, sometimes tried to get into the room when I was heading out, had to let it in from the balcony once and am not sure how it ended up out there, and it hung out with me in the lobby while waiting for the ride back to the airport).

That's the big down side of this trip. I'll miss the cat.

I wonder if I can get my sister to email cat pics while I'm travelling. She usually texts those, but I'm not going to count on my phone working as a phone out of the country.

why organize tech workers?

> why organize? don't you, as a software dev, get paid enough?

1. no, i don't
2. without my knowledge or consent, things i've made have killed people, and my only options were to shrug or quit
3. work should not give you PTSD
4. worker rights and communal welfare is about more than pay. it's about power dynamics, accountability, representation, and taking the craft back from the profiteers who readily dispose of us

Never got a tracking number on the replacement replacement fan (since the wrong part was sent the first time around) and I'm running out of day. I was told I'd get it by today, but I'm running out of day for that to be true.

Today the company that checks and does maintenance on our fire extinguishers came out to re-tag those. About an hour later the fire inspector came through. No violations.

Production test roast of the coffee I was working on yesterday turned out really nice. We'll be switching to that probably while I'm out of the country (unless sales become really awful). I don't normally take coffee with me when I travel but I might make an exception for this one.
