One of the people who got the Roasting Styles Exploration Kit put the coffee in front of their company's sensory panel and was kind enough to send their analysis. The score spread was 4 points across the three coffees, with the highest scoring one being the medium roast, the light roast scoring 1 point lower, and the dark roast coming in the remaining 3 points below that. Interesting to see their tasting notes.

If your executives inform you that they find it outrageous that 40% of all sick days taken by employees happen to fall on a Monday or a Friday...

...and the silence that ensues when you point out that Mondays and Fridays simply account for 40% of all workdays 😂

Proposed basically taking the 3 hour class I've been teaching at trade events lately and compressing that down into a 30-40 minute lecture/tasting with Q&A after. The audience is different, so that's not as difficult as it might sound.

I'd get paid for this. Not a lot, but more than my costs, so that's nice.

Also, the upcoming ebook now has its own separate marketing page that I can link people to. roastingbook.coffee/rcpd/

Got invited to do a short lecture or hands on coffee roasting session at a local (Chicago) event in March. I don't know exactly what I'm doing there, but I've agreed to work with them on figuring something out.

I am willing to spend a few minutes telling someone that my television gets video games and makes a nice computer monitor and my radio is tuned to my local NPR station for the 5 minute commute to and from work in exchange for an additional small cash gift.

I got $1 in the mail from Nielsen (the ratings company) with a letter threatening to call me with a phone survey. I'd be surprised if they had a valid phone number to do that and kind of wished they'd just stick the survey online as even if they do have my number the call probably won't get through.

Can you imagine what it was like discovering salt?

"hey why's that deer licking that rock? Silly animals."

'I'm gonna try it to.'

"what."

'im gonna go over there and lick that rock with the deer.'

2nd email on the roasting book email list is going out now with a preview of the ebook I've temporarily pivoted to. The first (and previous) message went out near the end of October so I'm keeping my promise of this being a very low volume mailing list.

It's more positive than some of my past emails to people in that organization. I half suspect that I'm on some list of people to contact if you want the answer, "this is a terrible idea and here are the many reasons why you don't want to go that route."

Personally, I'd be happy to see the machine in a class, but the manufacturer would need to supply an instructor who is willing to bend their automation system in ways that run counter to why anybody would buy one of their machines to begin with so I guess I'll find out within the next couple months if anything happens with that.
